There’s not much that concerns sailors more than fire on board a ship. No wonder, since ships were made of wood for thousands of years. Jumping into the sea was almost certainly fatal. Modern ships are no longer made of wood and the rescue equipment is better, but fire has lost little of its horror.
So fire protection continues to receive special attention within the shipping industry. International guidelines describe the requirements for materials and equipment. Lacquer coatings are included in the fire load and must therefore be low-flammable for maritime shipping. Verification of this is provided within the modules of the EC Declaration of Conformity, for example.
Given that safety at sea is such a high concern, we’re happy to contribute to its improvement. Although unloved by many, documentation is an important component of the safety concept. We’ll be following the BG Verkehr instructions for sending the documents in future to prevent misuse and to make the documentation more comprehensible.
What does this mean for you as a customer? Until now, you could use the product section of our website to download the EC Declaration of Conformity and its modules. This will no longer be possible in the future. Please send an e-mail as soon as possible to our product safety department via ps@hesse-lignal.de. The exact product number and batch number will be required when you request of the declaration of conformity.
This enables everything to be tracked in the worst case scenario and helps to prevent future incidents.
In this spirit, we wish you always a “hand's breadth of water beneath your keel” or for the sailors among you “fair winds and a following sea”.
